Pharaoh /ˈfɛːrəʊ/ is an Egyptian term that means “Great House”. Hence the term originally referred to the king’s palace but the meaning loosened over the course of Egyptian history until it became interchangeable with the Egyptian office of kingship in New Kingdom. Pharaohs were now believed to be the incarnation of Horus.

The title was gender neutral, that is, there is no female version of it. Although the rulers of Egypt were generally male, the pharaoh was used on the rare occasions when a female  ruled as well.
